It looks as if ''A Bug's Life,'' from the computer-animation outfit Pixar and some of the personnel behind ''Toy Story,'' is the best ant colony movie of the year. And that's no small distinction, considering the bug-eat-bug movie rivalry under way. Both this and the uncannily similar ''Antz'' are sophisticated, entertaining feats of animation, but ''A Bug's Life'' has the conceptual edge as a clearly defined family film (as opposed to the more verbally adult, yet visually youth-oriented ''Antz''). As directed by John Lasseter, who directed ''Toy Story,'' and Andrew Stanton, who collaborated on the ''Toy Story'' screenplay, ''A Bug's Life'' makes jaunty, imaginative use of both extraordinary technology and bold storytelling possibilities within the insect world.
At first ''A Bug's Life'' looks disappointingly familiar, as one more line of identical insect drones trudges across the screen. ''Antz'' started with the same collective mentality and then invoked bugs with star personalities (Woody Allen in one of his funniest recent performances) to deliver some zest. But this time the ants' story is more coherent on its own terms, so the audience is more caught up in narrative than in all-star individual characters. Also, ''A Bug's Life'' shows off the same shrewd anthropomorphism that gave ''Toy Story'' so much spark.
Though no children's film is without tyrants these days, and the bullies here are towering grasshoppers (with Kevin Spacey nice and threatening as their ringleader), ''A Bug's Life'' is still relatively benign. It concerns a whimsical, daydreamy ant named Flik (with the voice of Dave Foley) who accidentally runs afoul of the grasshoppers. Clinging to a sprig of dandelion fuzz and blowing off into the wind, Flik sets out to find reinforcements who will help defend the ant colony, but he accidentally comes across a bug circus. With these show-biz types, there's a bit of misunderstanding about what ''knock 'em dead'' means.
The circus clowns (with Denis Leary as a macho ladybug, David Hyde Pierce as a stick-shaped bug, Bonnie Hunt as a black widow spider and Madeline Kahn as a butterfly) show off some hilarious teamwork before being reluctantly dragged into the ant colony's troubles. Meanwhile, Phyllis Diller supplies the voice of an ant queen with a flower for a hairdo, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus frets charmingly as the princess who's sweet on Flik. There's no real need to know more than this except that the material combines pastel colors, natural settings and vibrant, comical insects into a spectacle that lots of children ought to find irresistible. The film's message about standing up for freedom is similar to that of ''Antz,'' but it's delivered with less strife and a lighter hand.
''A Bug's Life'' is being shown with Pixar's Academy Award-winning short, ''Geri's Game,'' in which an old man playing chess imagines a doppelganger partner for himself and is then carried away by the excitement of the game. It's a showcase for the incredible range of facial expressions that make this type of animation more and more invitingly lifelike all the time.
Although ''A Bug's Life'' is rated G, it includes big, scary grasshoppers who are sure to get their comeuppance in the end.

Dreamworks has continually tried to give computer animation giant Pixar some decent industry competition. What started out as a vendetta for Jeffrey Katzenberg against his former employers ended up creating solid results with the Shrek franchise, which beat out Pixar for the first “Best Animated Movie” Oscar. Now, with Over the Hedge, Dreamworks Animation turns its eye away from making fun of the Mouse empire and creates their strongest film yet.
Over the Hedge is a bit of a modern fable. RJ the raccoon (voiced by Bruce Willis) shows his lack of loyalty when his hunger pangs get too strong and he tries to steal food from Vincent, a bear he is supposed to be friends with. “Just take what you need” RJ tells himself but, despite that intelligent thought, RJ quickly tries to load up Vincent’s entire food stash. When the bear awakes, he forces RJ to refill the stash within a week or he’ll kill the raccoon. It is a violent, clearly stated threat for a children’s film, but the film’s only real dark moment, which the children in the audience of my showing didn’t seem to take exception to. The rest of the movie is fun filled age-appropriate content, nicely balanced with humor adults will appreciate and laugh at as well.
RJ heads for the only place a raccoon can find the needed amount of food in such a short amount of time: the suburbs. There he encounters a group of foraging animals who are new to suburbia. When the animals settled down for hibernation they were surrounded by woodland. When they wake up they find a mysterious wall in the form of the hedge. With RJ as their guide the animals begin to understand suburbia and the new forms of food it brings, nacho chips instead of bark, cookies instead of twigs, etc. Only the animal’s leader Verne, a turtle voiced by Garry Shandling, is wary of the raccoon, but even he is unaware that RJ isn’t helping them get a supply of food as much as he’s using them to get the food stash he needs to return to a hungry bear. This sort of double crossing storyline is nothing new to animated films, particularly when RJ starts feeling at home with the other animals and they start treating him like family. Those themes have been seen in other animated films recently like Ice Age, but that doesn’t make Over the Hedge feel like it’s just recycling a plot. The film takes familiar storylines but really makes them its own.
Directors Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick assemble an incredibly talented vocal cast for this movie, and then intelligently use what those cast members have to offer to create strong characters. Willis has done voiceover work in the past, but RJ really captures the mischevious, smart-aleck roots of Willis’s early career. I typically find Garry Shandling too whiney for my tastes, but his character voice for Verne loses that whine and feels earnest and loyal. Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara are teamed together in another husband wife relationship, this time in a family of porcupines. At this point the two play off each other so well they really should consider not doing a movie if the other one isn’t in it. Really, when was the last time Levy had a hit that didn’t involve O’Hara in some capacity? Wanda Sykes applies her attitude to Stella, a skunk who has a strong friendship with the other animals but doesn’t trust anybody new beyond that. William Shatner plays the father possum to Avril Lavigne’s daughter possum, which may be the oddest casting in the movie. Shatner actually breaks against the type of character he’s played lately, which mostly makes fun of himself, and puts in an honest fatherly performance. He still gets a few jabs in at his own acting style however, when he’s forced to play possum. Finally, Steve Carell steals the show in yet another supporting role, this time as Hammy, a hyperactive squirrel who really takes a liking to the new sugary food RJ introduces the animals to.

From the opening credits to an early gag involving a portrait artist,Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures Of Tintin formally announces its intent to respect the style and vision of Hergé, the Belgian artist who created Tintin and took the boy reporter/adventurer through two dozen books of comic-book adventures over the course of more than 40 years. Conscious hat-tips aside, though, Adventures Of Tintin is far more a modern movie experience than a retro one. Its motion-capture CGI renders the characters in rubbery, apple-cheeked versions that sometimes slide queasily into the uncanny valley; its script (written by the dream team of Doctor Who show-runner Steven Moffat, Hot Fuzz writer-director Edgar Wright, and Attack The Block writer-director Joe Cornish) is an of-the-moment action movie, little more than a lengthy series of big setpieces, crammed with fights and chases.
But most of those fights and chases are worth watching. When Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell) casually buys a model ship in a street market, then shrugs off the two men who immediately try to buy it from him, he unwittingly launches a massive McGuffin-hunt centering on an object hidden within the model. In typical Tintin fashion, one clue leads to the next, with the characters hopping from country to country, from ocean to desert, from a ruined country house to a sheik’s palace. And as in Hergé’s work, Tintin himself doesn’t have much personality, apart from determination and curiosity; he’s the narrative equivalent of a crowbar, a simple, sturdy tool that’s largely useful for prying and occasionally thunking a goon on the head. But while Tintin lacks backstory or personal development,Adventures Of Tintin compensates with his new partner Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis), who’s crammed with color, curses, and whiskey. As in the books, they make solid foils.
And Adventures Of Tintin makes for a solid ride, as it throws the pair into the midst of a vast whirligig of significant items lost and found, plots foiled and reconvened, and acquaintances ditched and recovered. (Among them, the twin incompetent lawmen Thompson and Thomson, voiced by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.) Spielberg directs with a keen eye for clarity, both visually and narratively: While the plot is dense and complex, the heroes’ goals are always clear, and the narrative plays fair with the mystery, drawing a straight, comprehensible line from one step to the next. (Far fairer than it plays with the laws of physics, which get mangled into unrecognizability, especially when comedy or excitement might result.) And the many action setpieces are carefully staged to be exciting and involving, but not confusing. Tintin falters a bit toward the end, spending so much energy on a large-scale fight that the small-scale battle that serves as a climax feels meager by comparison, and then pointedly setting up the sequels to come. But while it’s essentially just another slick Spielberg action machine, it’s operating effectively on all cylinders throughout

When he arrives in Rio, though, Blu finds that Jewel is not as receptive as he had hoped. He wants nothing more than to go home, but suddenly, he and Jewel are nabbed by a band of smugglers. Jewel's free spirited determination and Blu's brain power come in handy as the two escape from the smugglers and their bitter henchmen, Nigel the cockatoo. But, the two are not free yet. They are chained together, and there's one major problem: Blu cannot fly.
Thankfully, Blu and Jewel are befriended by birds like Rafael the toucan (voice of George Lopez), Nico (voice of Jaime Foxx) and Pedro (voice of Will.i.am), who not only lend them a wing, but also get them in the festive spirit for Carnaval. The entire city is alive with preparations for the big Carnaval parade, but Blu and Jewel must focus on removing their chains and getting back to their homes before Nigel comes along again to spoil the party.

While the storyline is fun and the voice acting is fabulous, those are not the things that make Riostand out in this day and age of animation glory. Nope, Rio's brilliance comes from the exotic locale. The spice and flavor of the Marvelous City, Rio de Janeiro, brings this festive flick to life and adds a rich cultural backdrop that will grab the interest of moviegoers of all ages.
The film is full of energy and life, and has a great theme about living to the fullest. I came away wanting to learn to Samba and try hang gliding off of Pedra Bonita Mountain. My youngest daughter (3) kept her 3D glasses on through the whole film for the first time ever, and she can't seem to remember "Rio," so she calls the movie "the booty-shaking movie." There is definitely a lot of feathered booty shaking in the movie! The only complaint I have, and I like the 3D overall, but it did make parts of the movie seem a little dim and some of the backgrounds blurry.
Rio contains a few mild rude words like "idiot," "butt," and "shut up." Also, there are a few instances of mild sexual innuendo (mostly to do with birds). Of course, the Carnaval (Portuguese spelling) costumes are skimpy, but nothing compared to the ones you see in pictures of the real thing. Some perilous scenes may frighten very young children. Kung Fu Panda 2 stands as a shining example of DreamWorks finally getting the sequel formula right. Building off of the success of the original 2008 hit, Panda 2 delivers more laughs, larger scale, finer animation, and arguably more heart. Jack Black returns as the incompetently powerful Po the panda to battle the next stage in warfare that threatens to make hand-to-hand combat extinct. Joined by the Furious Five, the group wages war amidst the beautiful landscape of China in thrilling sequences of 3D combat that highlight the evolution of the fighting in the first film. With newcomer Jennifer Yuh at the helm, backed by the returning talents of writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger along with the full voice cast, Kung Fu Panda 2 is the latest animated film to blur the lines between the admiration from adults and kids alike, and brings bang for your buck in 3D. Po (Black) is living it up as the legendary Dragon Warrior alongside the Furious Five—Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Crane (David Cross), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), and Viper (Lucy Liu). They watch over the Valley of Peace and defeat all threats. But when a new enemy rises in the form of Shen (Gary Oldman) with a deadly weapon, it threatens to irradicate the need for any form of martial arts. Po and his companions must travel into the heart of China to face off against Shen, but the secret to securing the future lies in Po’s mysterious past.
One clear sign that the DreamWorks crew were listening to the criticism and praise of the original is that the hand-drawn animation that took place in the intro of the first film is not only back, but makes a few more appearances throughout. Rendered in 3D, the opening sequences for Kung Fu Panda 2 are dripping with the fine detail that the extra dimension provides to a layered but flat scene. While this may be Yuh’s first feature film as director, she is familiar with the hand-drawn animation as she directed the sequences in the first film. Another interesting addition is how Po fights alongside the Furious Five. Instead of fighting as individuals, they work in tandem to disperse foes in interesting combinations. While they sometimes end up a blur, it never becomes frustrating. The fights are relentlessly entertaining, and the infusion of humor into the skirmishes feels fresh.
Unfortunately, not everything in this sequel is better. One of the weaker parts of Panda 2 is in the main baddie. While Tai Long was capable of single-handedly defeating the Furious Five, Shen has no such skill. Considering he is a peacock, I had my doubts about his ability to fight to begin with. Luckily, they didn’t try and sell him as an overly powerful fighter but instead a thinker. That isn’t to say that Shen can’t hold his own at times; his use of metal talons and daggers hidden within his tail help give him an edge.
Kung Fu Panda 2 could have been a quick cash-grab without any soul. The film was a follow-up to a smash success, and yet I can’t stop thinking about how much the film impressed me. Having been an outspoken fan of the original, it brings me joy to praise its sequel. With the oddity of improving in every facet except for the antagonist, Panda 2 shows that hard work can pay off and DreamWorks can be trusted to improve on a previous product. There is no denying that this film has a smooth confidence, and if this is a sign of the future of the franchise, I can’t wait to see where they go from here.

From an opening dream sequence whose abstract style seems culled straight from a modern manga, the film enters instant classic status as some of the most gorgeous animation Hollywood has produced since the golden age of Disney. Eschewing the cold and severe art of Dreamworks' Shrek films , the makers of Kung Fu Panda fill the screen with painterly backdrops of mountain vistas and fluttering leaves that give Zhang Yimou a run for his money. It somehow makes it all the funnier to have the titular panda, Po (Black), come huffing and wheezing through the impeccable and non-specific ancient Chinalandscapes like a less-active relative of Hurley on Lost.
Standing at first between Po and his future as a chubby warrior of destiny, however, is not Tai Lung but the star pupils at the Jade Palace, a jealous menagerie of kung fu animal superstars composed of Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Crane (David Cross), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Monkey (Chan). Trained by master Shifu, a diminutive red panda voiced with appropriately embittered edge by Dustin Hoffman, as a lightning-quick squad of kung-fu-coolness, the five resent the panda-come-lately and don't make things easy. Wouldn't you know: Po makes them reconsider their assumptions, and learns a few things about himself, and the true meaning of courage along the way, particularly after the lightning-quick and merciless Tai Lung shows up. What helps Kung Fu Panda succeed is not just the classic beauty of the animation but also another way it avoids the Shrek pitfall by steering clear of that series' flat irony and tired snark. Po's journey to enlightened martial arts coolness is modeled quite explicitly on old Chan-style films like Drunken Master (the fighting style that Po eventually takes on is actually a more PG-friendly variation of that used by Chan), where family unity and service to the community is prized above all.
